Independence Room Transition Information

We are excited to have your child in the Independence classroom soon! As your child becomes ready to make the transition to our room there are few things that might be helpful to know.  We all eat lunch at noon and nap directly following lunch at 12:30 pm. We hope for about a 2/2.5 hour nap, sometimes they are shorter and sometimes they are longer. Diapers are still changed twice a day plus any additional BM diapers needed. Children at this age may (but not always) start to show signs of interest in using the toilet. We will work together to create a plan if your child begins to want to sit on the potty. For now, we are doing stand up diaper changes as much as possible to allow them practice in pulling their pants up and down.

We still go outside twice a day for recess, so shoes, coats, sun hats, sun screen, rain gear, and rain boots are recommended. We often get very messy throughout the day so lots of extra clothes are required.

In the Independence Room we fully transition to a blanket instead of a sleep sack if they are still using those for nap.

Please continue to provide your child with an insulated lunch sack large enough to include a good variety of several different nutritional lunch choices along with an ice pack. We will drink from open cups during snack times and if you haven’t made the transition from bottles of milk to sippy cups of milk now is the time to do so. Seeing their peers drinking from sippy cups at the lunch/snack table aids in this transition. The Independence Room is a very social and active place. Many of the skills and activities that the children will be exposed to in future classes are introduced in the Independence Room. We now have a designated meeting time where we can all gather together on the carpet and read library books and sing songs. Children will be able to make their own choices from a variety of toys, puzzles, dramatic play items, and elements from science and nature.  We look forward to seeing you soon in the independence classroom! Thank you.
